Golden League - Golden Troubles

This year controversy seems to be dogging the Golden League series.

Last week, in Paris we had the situation of the shambles of the last lap in the Men's 3000m SteepleChase where Kenyan Paul Koech was denied victory after confusion of the last lap. Whether the bell had been rung or not, he was already celebrating his victory when France's Bouabdallah Tahri came through the finish and continued running. A startled Keoch took up the running and was then confronted by a barrier that was no longer there. It was farcical and to deny the Kenyan victory would add further insult to injury.

Fortunately, for myself, the performance of the USA's Allan Webb in the 1500m made up for the shambles.

And then we have Rome. Oh boy, what can be said when viewers and the stadium audience are confronted by a man clutching his side while a javelin has pierced his side.

Finland's Tero Pitkamaki who was still in contention up until the delivery of a wild throw that went way off to the side around 85 meters and speared the side of Speared French long-jumper Salim Sdiri. Thank heavens that it is reported that Sdiri is not seriously injured.

It could have gone all so wrong, believe me for some watching, seeing a javelin lodged in someone is not the prettiest of sights and if the incident led to a death then the vision would surely have been lodged in their minds for a long long time.

This should be taken as a warning to track organisers worldwide and there will certainly need to be a review of the format of the events program for the Golden League to avoid such a diabolical scenario occurring again.

For Pitkamaki it spelled the end of his Jackpot aspirations with victory going to Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen with a throw of 88.36, which it must be said the Finn looked sure to match until the bizarre situation arose.

On this occasion, there was no dramatic win by an ex-high school prodigy in the form of Webb to win the 1500m, instead it was left to Golden Mile winner in Oslo, Morocco's Adil Kaouch to take the win in 3:30.77. Kaouch has been around for quite a while but was always in the shadow of his compatriot, the great El Guerrouj.

Zurich awaits to hopefully lift the Golden League to the levels we know it can achieve
