VANCOUVER, June 26, 2005 – More than 4,000 competitors, including a roster of elite half-marathon racers, helped make the Seventh Annual Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon (SVHM) & 5K one of the most competitive road races of the season. Participants were also running to raise funds for VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s Your Health-Your Choice program to support a variety of important programs and centres at the hospitals, including the Breast Cancer Reconstruction Program, the Spine Centre, the Eye Care Centre, the ALS Clinic, the Ovarian Cancer Research Program and the in it for life Fund, which funds top priority medical needs.

In the men’s half-marathon, Giitah Macharia of St. Catharines, Ontario, the current Canada Running Series Champion, made his decisive break from the field at the 15-kilometre mark, establishing a clear lead to win the race in 64:55. It was a tight race for second between Nick Rogers of Eugene, Oregon and Toronto’s Danny Kassap. Rogers surged forward in the final minutes of the race to finish second at 65:08, while Kassap – who won last September’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon – was a close third with a time of 65:38.

Last year’s SVHM top female half-marathoner Lioudmila Kortchaguina of Toronto had a strong lead throughout the event and once again placed first with a time of 74:32. Kortchaguina who is Canada’s #1 ranked long-distance female and also became Canadian Women’s Marathon Champion in Ottawa with a 2:32:19 – two days after she received her Canadian citizenship – was the clear pre-race favourite. Gwen Greiner of Seattle, Washington placed second with 79:10, with Nancy Tinari of Vancouver just behind her with 79:24.

The 5K Run/Walk saw Vancouver’s Dave Reed cross the finish line at 17:03, while Arania Adolphson of Seattle, Washington was the top female finisher and second across the line with a time of 21:49.

The Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5K is part of the prestigious Canada Running Series. Growing in annual popularity, it is also a highly successful fundraising event. While donations are still being tallied, over $120,000 is expected to be raised for VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, a substantial increase over the $70,000 raised last year. Scotiabank will once again match up to $15,000 of the funds raised by its employees, many of whom participated in today’s event.

The awards ceremony struck an emotional note when two special fundraising awards were presented in memory of Dr. Patty Clugston, a talented plastic surgeon who founded the Breast Cancer Reconstruction Program at UBC Hospital 10 years ago. Scotiabank employee Chris Calverley raised a total of $10,360 for the Breast Cancer Reconstruction Program and was the top individual fundraiser this year. The top team donation of over $25,000 came from “Dr. Patty’s Pals”, a group of more than one hundred colleagues, friends and relatives of Dr. Clugston.
