OTTAWA – Athletics Canada announced today the athletes that will take part in the 22nd IAAF World Race Walking Cup in La Coruña, Spain, May 13th and 14th. The 22nd IAAF World Race Walking Cup has attracted entries from a record number of IAAF Member Federations with athletes from 63 nations competing.
Two of the senior race winners from the last edition in Naumburg, Germany, in 2004, Ecuador’s World champion Jefferson Perez (men 20km) and Russia’s World silver medalist Aleksey Voyevodin (men 50km), return in search of a third consecutive win. The Canadian World Race Walking Cup team will be lead by veteran Tim Berrett who will mentor first year Seniors Rachel Lavallée and Pierre-Luc Ménard.

Veteran Canadian racer Tim Berrett of Edmonton, AB enters his 17th season on the Canadian National team. The four time Olympian and Commonwealth Games medalist will be competing in his 9th World Race Walking Cup.
Rachel Lavallée of Peterborough, ON enters the World Race Walking Cup on a winning note following a 1st place finish in the 5km race walk at the 112th edition of the Penn Relays Carnival (April 29th). Rachel established a new Canadian record of 47:37 at the 2005 Pan Am RW Cup in Lima Peru as she took first place in the 10km junior women’s race.
Pierre-Luc Ménard from Montréal won a silver medal in the 20km race walk at the 2005 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg, MB, and a gold medal in the 10km race walk at the 2005 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Montréal, QC. Also of note, Pierre-Luc finished in first place with a time of 45:36 at the 2004 Canada-USA Junior Dual in Edmonton as a first year junior athlete.
