Athletics Canada announces Steve Leblanc hired as Atlantic Region Head Coach

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada and the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic are pleased to announce that Steve Leblanc from Edmonton, AB has been hired to fill the newly created position of Atlantic Region Head Coach. Also Joel Bourgeois of Moncton, NB has accepted a high performance part-time coaching position for the Atlantic region, based in Moncton.

Steve Leblanc will design, lead and coordinate the training and competition program of a targeted group of athletes identified within a Team Atlantic concept with a growing emphasis on a Moncton based high performance group. Steve will work in close collaboration with club/personal coaches and other Atlantic based professional coaches to support the goals of Athletics Canada’s Strategic Plan and the Long Term Athlete Development Model. Mr. Leblanc will also work closely with Dan Hennigar, High Performance Atlantic Regional Coach, who is based out of Halifax, NS. The Atlantic Region Head Coach will be based at the Université de Moncton in Moncton, NB.

Joel will be based in Moncton and will work as endurance events coach. Joel is an 8-time Canadian champion and was named Male Athlete of the Year at l’Université de Moncton from 1990-1995. He also competed at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games and won the gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Bourgeois also won Canada’s only medal in athletics at the 1995 World University Games.

The creation of these positions was made possible from the awarding of the 2010 World Junior Championships to Canada and partnerships with the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, Université de Moncton and the four provincial branches.

The region has many excellent coaches who will greatly benefit from programming that will be developed in partnership with Steve Leblanc, Dan Hennigar and Joel Bourgeois.” Says Ken Bagnell, President of the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic. “We look forward to seeing more Atlantic Canadians representing Canada as part of our national team programs in the future.”

Steve and Joel’s positions have been created to increase athletics results at the national and international level.
