Over 400 hundred runners and walkers participated in Western Province's night road race.
The Dan Luyt 15km race, which was hosted by Bellville Athletic Club, was run through the streetlit streets of Durbanville in early May.

The annual race has previously been run on a Saturday morning. This year, however, the race date clashed with another popular race in the area so the organisers shifted the date and made it a night race.

"Night races are popular in Gauteng and Natal, and we are very proud to be associated with one of the first one to be staged in the Western Cape," said Bellville Athletic Club Chairman, Marius Kruger. "Running at night is challenging in terms of visibility and safety on the road. Runners were encouraged to wear reflective gear and local company besafe.co.za kindly leant a number of lightweight flashing running vests to marshals and runners." Marius added that the club's group running leaders would be using flashing vests during the coming winter months to enable their runners to train safely on the roads on the dark winter evenings.

Tania de Jonge, a member of the Varsity Old Boys Running Club was the first lady in. "Running in the dark felt a bit strange at first but it was fine - I really enjoyed it. The flashing vest was great, really comfortable and certainly gives one the security of visibility on the road." The mens' race was won by Yondela Salaze from Mr Price.
