Dion Middelkoop was born and bred in the Mother City, Cape
Town.
In 1984, he started High School at Westerford High in Ronderbosch.
At school, he thought he was a good runner, however when it
came to running at the inter-schools, he soon found out that
the track was "a bit fast for me".
So, he ventured to the roads and since 1986 this has been
his first love. 10 years later in 1996, he was chosen to represent
Western Province at the National Marathon Champs and ran his
PB of 2h32:02 for the 42Km. To coin his own phrase "a
soft PB".
In the early 90's, he did a bit of Orienteering with a friend,
however once they parted comapny his interest in the sport
of Orient diminished.
In 2001, Dion tried his hand at the Ironman and found that
"easy !!!", in his own words. He feels if ever he
had the time he would train to see whether he could break
10Hrs.
He enjoys his mountain Bike and gets to put in the odd ride
between all his other activities. Dion still swims a bit,
but running is his only real love. That is when it comes to
sport.
Dion, has been extensively involved with coaching at UCT
since the mid 90's. At present his star athlete is his wife
Dawn.
Time-to-Run is proud
to have a man as keen and passionate about running, as Dion
Middelkoop, as their roving reporter. And with this in mind
we welcome Dion.
