Note Viljoen fourth in Birmingham

Monday, 27 August 2012 - Sunette Viljoen finished fourth in the women’s javelin throw at the 12th leg of the Samsung Diamond League in Birmingham, England yesterday (26 August).

Viljoen (SA and Africa record holder) opened with a throw of 62.13m placing her second behind the Olympic champion, Barbora Spotakova (CZE), but could not improve the distance in the subsequent rounds. Christina Obergfoll (GER) then moved into the second position with her second attempt measuring 62.32m. In the third round Ukraine’s Vera Rebryk heaved the javelin to 62.82m, pushing the South African down another spot. Viljoen’s second round attempt was measured at 59.58m followed by 60.18m, 58.80m, 60.18m and 61.14m. Spotakova won the event with 66.08m in the opening round.

“I did my utmost best and will keep on fighting until the end of the season,” said Viljoen after the event. Her next event will be in Berlin on 2 September.

Lehann Fourie, in the men’s 110m hurdles, finished seventh in 13.59sec. Olympic Champion, Aries Meritt (USA), won the race in 12.95sec while compatriots Jason Richardson and David Oliver crossed the line in 12.98sec and 13.28sec respectively.

The next round of the Samsung Diamond League will take place in Zurich, Switzerland on 30 August.
