10k Competition between people of different abilities

Hi, this is possibly an unusual issue. Myself and a friend are training for a 10k race in april. We are of different abilities based on times from an event last year. We are wondering what would be a fair way to compare our times in this years events to determine a 'winner'.

Last year, I ran 10k in 49:50, and they ran it in 59:05.

I was initially thinking to assign the 'winner' title to whoever IMPROVED their time as a % of their previous time. BUT, in doing so, it seems to slightly favor the 59:05 runner for the reasons that they have a lot more room to improve.

Any alternative ideas?

Thanks...!

Hi sirchimp and welcome to the forums

weight and age is an ideal way to determine the winner

the lighter and younger the runner the more the handicap plays against the person

discuss further to establish the gauge

hope this helps
