SA Peninsula Marathon returns to flat route

The popular Peninsula Marathon returns to the traditional route that earned it the reputation as ‘Africa’s Fastest Marathon’. The 2011 edition of the Old Mutual Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon qualifier will be run between Green Point and Simon’s Town on 20 February.

After two years of going over Red Hill due to the World Cup, next year the Peninsula will start at 5.15am in Main Road, opposite the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, go through the city, follow Main Road through the Southern Suburbs and end at the Naval Sports Grounds in Simon’s Town.

For those who want something less taxing there’s the Peninsula Half Marathon, which starts at 7am at the Bergvliet Sports Club in Children’s Way before joining the 42.2km route heading South in Main Road.

Roger McCallum, the Chairperson of the organising club, Celtic Harriers, said: ‘This is an ideal qualifier for those runners wanting to get a good seeding for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and Comrades. It’s a fantastic route and we have put measures in place to ensure that every runner is well provided for in terms of water and Coke during the race. Club stalwart and long-time organiser of the Two Oceans, Chet Sainsbury, and his dedicated team of helpers will take charge of the route ensuring that refreshments stations are well stocked. So runners can look forward to another great Peninsula Marathon, the 44th running of the event. Please enter early, and best wishes for a fantastic run. We have already put our order in for perfect weather but there may just be a touch of wind’

Top Events will take care of entries and results. Entries are now open. Log on to www.topevents.co.za to enter or pick up an entry form at the Rondebosch, Tygervalley, Somerset Mall or Canal Walk branches of Sportsmans Warehouse. Entries close on 11 February 2011.

Another change for the 2011 race is that number collection will now take place on Saturday 19 February from 10h00 - 17h00 at the following venues:

- Sportsmans Warehouse Rondebosch
- Sportsmans Warehouse Tygervalley
- New Balance Diep River - Mocke Road

Among the big names to have won this race include Willie Olivier, Danie Malan, Don Hartley, Bernard Rose, Vincent Rakabaele, Mark Plaatjies, Thompson Magawana, Willie Mtolo, Luketz Swartbooi and Ernest Tjela ( a three-time winner ) who still holds the course record at 2hrs 11min 47secs Among the women, Ulla Paul was the 1st winner in 1975 and other big names among the winners are Sonja Laxton, Isavel Roche- Kelly, Beverley Malan, Lindsay Weight, Helen Lucre, Farwa Mentoor, Elana Meyer, Grace de Oliveira, Tanith Maxwell, Bulelwa Mtshagi and the only 4-time winner—Monica Drogemoller of Celtics who has held the course record of 2hrs 37 min 19 sec since 1990. The Peninsula was founded by our longest active member, now 83 years old—Alex Jones.
