Java SA dominance continues at Zone 6 Games

The South African Athletics team added 5 gold medals to their tally on day 2 of the athletics programme at Zone 6.

Akani Simbini added gold in the 200m to the one he won in the 100m, while the promising Thapelo Madiba looks set to join the rich heritage of South African 800m runners after winning his event. The irrepressible Thato Makhafola put her fall at the World Junior Championships behind her to win the women’s 800m.

In the women’s Shot Put, Lezaan Jordaan, a finalist at the World Junior Championships, although she is still only a youth athlete, added the gold medal to her already impressive CV. Mpho Maphuta put a run of injuries over the past two years to won the Long Jump.

In the men’s Javelin, World Youth Champion Reinhard van Zyl showed that his is recovering from an injury that kept him out for most of this year when he took the silver medal.

University of Johannesburg student Chante van Tonder added the 200m silver medal to her 100m gold.
