Kimberley Smith smashes New Zealand 10,000m record
Kimberley Smith carved 45 seconds off her New Zealand 10,000m record in finishing second in 30m 35.54s at the Payton Jordan Cardinal meeting at Stanford University in California today.
The Beijing Olympic Games bound runner had set her previous record at the same meeting a year ago.
The race was won by Shalane Flanagan of US in 30m 34.49s.
Athletics New Zealand high performance manager Kevin Ankrom said that Smith's performance is outstanding and has set her up for a bold showing in Beijing.
"If this is any indication of how she is leading up to Beijing then having done well this year and staying healthy she will continue to improve," he said.
At the same meeting Jason Woolhouse was 11th in the 5000m in 13m 36.39s and Fiona Crombie finished 12th in the 3000m steeplechase in 10m 15.46s.
