Nick Willis wins in his hometown and roundup of other news
MICHIGAN
Nick Willis won the 800m in 1m 47.01s at the Len Paddock Invitational meeting on his home track at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor.
Willis, who has a personal best of 1m 45.54s set in 2004, beat Reebok team mates Nate Brannen 1m 47.81s and Andrew Ellerton 1m 48.35s.
Willis will next race against world 1500m and 5000m champion Bernard Lagat over 1500m at the adidas track classic in Carson California on Sunday. Willis won last year in 3m 35.85s.
OSAKA
Beatrice Faumuina finished fifth in the discus throw at the IAAF world athletic tour grand prix meeting in Osaka. In steady rain and chilly conditions, 12.5c, the 1997 world champion was out to 57.61m. Chinese athletes took the first two placings Aimin Song winning with 60.38m, 14cm better than Taifeng Sun. Aretha Thurmond of US, who competed at Waitakere in February, was third with a throw of 58.99m.
AUCKLAND
Ryan Sissons rounded out his racing prior to the world triathlon championships in Vancouver next month with a win in the annual HEB cross country race in Pukekohe on Saturday. The 19 year old blitzed the field winning the 7500m senior event easing up in 25m 8s. Fellow triathlete Liam Scopes was second in 25m 32s.
Sissons will compete in the world under 23 championship on 8 June. The race was his running training for the day having done a 90 minutes swimming session in the morning and after the cross country race he cycled home covering 50km.
Rachael Kingstone, in the W19 grade, won the combined 5000m race with the senior women. Kingstone, third in the W19 last year, had a great battle with Nikki Hamblin around the A and P showgrounds course, before setting up a long sprint finish to secure the win in 19m 21s, five seconds ahead of Hamblin.
Kingstone was third in the New Zealand secondary schools senior girls cross country championship last year, behind Olivia Burne and Nicki McFadzien, while Hamblin from Great Britain won the New Zealand W19 800m 1500m double at the national track championships six weeks ago.
Jonathan Jackson, the national M16 3000m track champion, showed he is just at home over the country following up his M16 win last year with a convincing victory in the M19 5000m in 16m 42s. Kimberley Burke was an impressive winner of the W16 3500m in 13m 28s.
CAMBRIDGE
Hamilton City Hawks club scooped the pool at the annual Cambridge cross country relays, winning the men and women, masters men and women and the youth grade relays. The Taumaranui team, comprising of the Murrihy sisters, were second in the women, Melissa anchoring them through in the fastest individual women's time for the 3000m circuit of 11m 55s. Steven O'Callaghan of Lake City Rotorua ran the fastest lap in the men with 9m 47s.
HASTINGS
Neville Smith of Hastings won the annual Hastings 6km steeplechase at the Hastings Showgrounds. Competing in perfect cross country conditions, overcast, cold southerly wind and sticky course after overnight rain, Smith recorded 20m 46s to finish 1m 16s ahead of Josh Barber (Hastings) with Eric Speakman (Napier) third in 22m 16s. Speakman also competed in the junior race over 4.5km winning in 15m 57s. Jesse Williams (Hastings) won the M16 3km in 10m 14s.
Hayley Davis of Napier won the women's 4.5km in 21m 33s. The junior women's 3km went to Tarryn Powell of Hastings in 13m 12s, while Laura Nagel of Napier won the W16 3km in 11m 28s.
Before the racing started a moment of silence was observed in memory of Hastings Harrier Club member Jack Tregurtha who passed away last Thursday.
GORE
Defending champion Ricky Gutsell (Gore club) won the Gore half marathon on Sunday and with it the Southland half marathon title. His time of 1h 19m 9s on the tough, hilly course gave him a convincing 3m 24s lead over second placed Glen MacIntosh (Invercargill) with past winner Graham Sinnamon (Alexandra) in third. This is Gutsell's fifth Southland title in a row, having won the provincial half marathon, full marathon, cross country and road championships last season.
Dunedin visitor Carol Chettleburgh was first woman in 1h 35m 35s, Roanna Porter 1m 37m 4s was second and Carmen McCall third in 1h 37m 29s.
ROUTEBURN CLASSIC
Richard Ussher won the 38km alpine race in 2h 55m 30s, three minutes ahead of Jacob Roberts. Craig Barrett was eighth in 3h 25m 47s.
Eveline Coombe of Wanaka, former winner at the Rotorua marathon, won the women's section in 3h 38m 22s. Kristina Crane was second in 3h 44m 35s.
