10 Medals for Scots at UK Championships and Olympic Trials
The final medal haul for Scottish athletes over the three-day Aviva UK Championships and Olympic Trials (Friday 11th - Sunday 13th July) totalled ten, more than double the tally in 2006 and three better than the seven medals won in 2007.
The final medal haul for Scottish athletes over the three-day Aviva UK Championships and Olympic Trials (Friday 11th - Sunday 13th July) totalled ten, more than double the tally in 2006 and three better than the seven medals won in 2007.
It was treble bronze on day three, as Diane Bradley (Tonbridge), Laura Kenney (Royal Sutton Coldfield) and Andrew Lemoncello (Fife AC) finished third in their respective 5000m walk, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase events.
Bradley, the British Masters champion over the 3000m and 5000m walk, clocked a new lifetime best (26:19.45) in the second track event of the day to cross the line behind Niobe Menendez (Steyning) in second (25:18.67) and form athlete Johanna Jackson (Redcar), victorious in 21:30.75.
Prior to the endurance athletes kicking off the final day of Championships action, Neil Fachie (Aberdeen AC), nominated for selection for the Beijing Paralympics, had scorched to victory in the men’s 100m ambulant race (11.63s), the first of two wins, going on to dominate the ambulant 200m later in the day (23.35s).
Beijing-bound team mate Libby Clegg (Border Harriers) matched his efforts with an emphatic win in the women’s ambulant 100m (12.80s), the pair hitting outstanding form as the countdown to the Paralympics continues.
The Scottish athletes' Championships focus moved back to the endurance events with a third place finish for European under-23 gold medallist Laura Kenney (pictured) in the 5000m
Kenney, who clocked a personal best of 15:26.96 - fourth fastest on the Scottish All-Time list - for the distance in Spain on June 24th, ran solo for the majority of the race with Jo Pavey (Exeter) in 15:12.55 and Hayley Yelling (Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow) in 15:38.60, out on their own.
Pavey leads Kenney on the UK Power of 10 performance rankings for 2008 to date.
With a disappointing third place finish, a question mark remains over Andrew Lemoncello’s Beijing place. One of only two athletes with the Olympic ‘A’ standard going into today’s race, he looked to have timed his finish to perfection, before being out sprinted by Adam Bowden (Harrow) and then Luke Gunn (Derby).
The winner in a tightly fought British Milers Club meeting a fortnight ago where he secured the ’B’ standard with a time of 8:27.40, he clocked 8:36.56 to winner Bowden’s 8:36.17. Stuart Stokes, the only other athlete with the required mark, finished fourth in 8:44.02 leaving the selectors with one of many headaches they‘ll face this week.
