Abdi sixth in final
Youcef Abdi tonight ran the most amazing race of his career in front of around 80,000 spectators in China's national stadium.
Youcef Abdi tonight ran the most amazing race of his career in front of around 80,000 spectators in China's national stadium.
In a race that was set up for the former 1500m runner, he used his fast finishing speed to finish sixth.
Abdi surpassed his personal best twice in three days running 8.16.36. A time just fourteen seconds outside Shaun Creighton’s Australian record and the fastest time ever by an Australian at the Olympics.
His sixth placing was the second highest by an Australian, bettered only by Kerry O’Briens fourth place at Mexico City in 1968.
Sally McLellan has qualified 6th fastest for the women's 100m hurdles final in Beijing.
At her first Olympic Games, Sally has placed fourth in semi final number one; a photo finish ruling needed to split the qualifiers from second position down.
It took the fastest time in the world this year of 12.43, by American Lolo Jones to defeat the Aussie.
Her time of 12.70 was quicker than her 12.83 that got her into the semis. McLellan also reworking the Australian history books clocking the fastest two times ever by an Australian at the Olympic games.
The second semi final wasn't without carnage as Swedish glamour girl, Susanna Kallur, fell after collecting the first barrier.
In a hot field for the women's discus final tonight, the youngest member of the Australian track & field team, Dani Samuels was in action.
Her first round throw of 57.14 metres was well short of her best effort. However it was a relief for the 20 year old to get a throw in the sector early on in the competiton. After round one, she was in 8th place.
A second round foul left Dani in 11th place after round two.
Her third round heave of 60.15 momentarily bumped her up to eighth place, with only the Chinese girl Aimin Song and Iryna Yatchenko of Bulgaria having a chance of replacing Dani in the top eight with a further three throws.
Song was able to produce a third round throw long enough to knock the Aussie out of the competition.
