Nedbank Cape Town Marathon on 21 September
Preparations for the Nedbank Cape Town Marathon on 21 September are under way
JOHANNESBURG - Preparations for the Nedbank Cape Town Marathon on 21 September are under way.
The marathon boasts one of the fastest and most scenic routes in all city marathons. It is one of the few IAAF certified routes in the African continent. A certified route means that the athletes performances will have a legal standing to be recognised for the IAAF World Championships in Germany in 2009.
Mluleki Nobanda (Mr. Price Club) won the race last year with the fastest time of 2hrs 14min and 45sec, followed by Collen Makaza (Mr Price Club KZN) at 2:16:09 and the third place was taken by George Ntshiliza (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Club) closing the top three with his competitive time of 2:16:29.
On the ladies side, Samukeliso Moyo (Nedbank Club Gauteng North) won the race by 2:41:29, second place was taken by the Ethiopian born Asrat Addis (ADT Club) with 2:43:20 and on third position was Charne Bosman (Mr Price Club CGA) with a time of 2:44:32.
The City of Cape Town is working hand in glove with the Local Organising Committee to ensure that the marathon is of a high standard and can ensure that the athletes reach the IAAF Marathon qualifying standards. This race will have a unique medal that is designed to showcase one of the landmarks in Cape Town. The medal should be a favourite with both the locals and the tourists. The medal will outline the route and all the momentous sceneries that it covers. The top ten men and women will all receive a gold medal and the next 100 athletes a silver and the rest a bronze medal. All finishers will be sure to walk away with this collector’s medal.
