2008 Cape Odyssey - van Rensburgs take title
The last stage of this year’s Cape Odyssey provided spectators and supporters with an exciting end to the 5-day event over 202km, which started in Hermanus and finished at the Boschendal Wine Estate today (12 October).
The last stage of this year’s Cape Odyssey provided spectators and supporters with an exciting end to the 5-day event over 202km, which started in Hermanus and finished at the Boschendal Wine Estate today (12 October).
With their three stage wins, brothers Jacques and Mauritz Jansen van Rensburg of the Mr Price team ensured their overall victory in a time of 16 hours, 47 minutes and 51 seconds. Finishing in second place overall, was the Salomon Pro team Arrie de Swardt and Ryno Griesel in a total time of 17 hours and 1 second. Although the Montrail/Capestorm Men secured their second stage win today, they finished in third position overall in a time of 17:09:09.
Linda Doke of the Salomon Pro Ladies team, successfully defended her inaugural Cape Odyssey (2007) title by winning the Ladies’ division again with new team mate Karoline Hanks. Their overall time was 20 hours, 38 minutes and 46 seconds. They were followed by The Whippets, Elle Courts and Tanya Templeton (20:56:35), with A K Sports Girls (Suzette Linden and Elizabeth Swanepoel) finishing in third place (21:50:16).
In the Mixed category The Perfect Storm team Dirk Cloete and Heleen Joubert secured their victory by winning their fourth stage during this event. They finished in an overall time of 18 hours, 42 minutes and 10 seconds. Team Mojo (John Morison and Moyra Sheard) came in second (19:31:40) with the Big Tree/Capestorm 1 development team (Carlo Jacobs and Martha Pretorius) taking third place in an overall time of 19:55:14.
In the Masters division, last year’s Mixed category winner Ian Little of Montrail/Capestorm 1 ensured a second Cape Odyssey category win with new team mate Vivienne Williams. Their overall time for the event was 20 hours, 52 minutes and 21 seconds. The West Coast Cruisers Dave Johnston and Willie Coetzee finished second (21:41:43) with Italian team Giovanni Montini and Paolo Bertini of Icarus Skysport Italy finished in third place (22:12:01).
Says Mauritz Jansen van Rensburg of the winning Mr Price team: “This was an awesome event and the win was overwhelming. I still can’t believe it.†Jacques adds: “Last night was one of the longest in my life. We were only 6 minutes ahead of the second time, and anything could happen today. We were a bit nervous before the start this morning, but managed to run at a good pace to secure our win. What a privilege it’s been to run this race with my brother.†They have not decided yet whether they will be participating again next year. “If I do, it’ll definitely be with Jacques. For now, I’d like to spend some quality time with my family again.â€
Ryno Griesel of Salomon Pro team, who secured a second place overall during last year’s event (with a different partner), says: “I’m so grateful and thrilled that we managed to secure the overall second place position in this year’s Cape Odyssey.†Commenting on whether he’ll be back for the challenge again next year, Griesel says: “Of course I’ll be back!†His running partner for this year’s 5-day trail running challenge was Arrie de Swardt, who isn’t so sure whether he’ll be back for the next one. “It was an unbelievable experience and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s a lot tougher than one expects.†Griesel said in conclusion that his forte is definitely the technical routes, so he would like to see more single track and rocky terrain next year.
According to Stage 5’s winners, Dion Middelkoop and William Robinson of Montrail/Capestorm Men, today was lovely. “I’m glad it’s over. We thought we could perhaps make up the time difference today, and took the lead after about 5km.†Robinson adds: “It was wonderful out there today. When we came down the mountain, the whole area was covered in mist – what a beautiful sight. This year’s Cape Odyssey was much more runable than last year’s with some really breathtaking sections along the route.â€
Linda Doke, of the Salomon Pro Ladies team and winner of last year’s event, says: “The race was fantastic. It was a relief to finish, as there was a great expectation for me to do as well as last year. Karoline is a great team mate. Training with your partner is so important – it teaches you how to pace, and know each other’s strengths. You have to place a lot of trust in your partner when you’re running for 5 days.†For Karoline this was a new experience. It’s great to be able to push your body to the limit to see how far it will go. It was a very exciting race.â€
In the Mixed category The Perfect Storm team Dirk Cloete and Heleen Joubert secured their category win. Says Cloete: “My first Cape Odyssey was awesome. It’s just such a privilege to be healthy and run a race like this. The Mixed category was very competitive this year, and anything could happen. In order to win, one needs to be mentally and physically fit, as well as have a good partner. I think that is what’s pulled us through.â€
The second Cape Odyssey was once again a hugely successful event. Those interested in participating in the 2009 event, can visit www.cape-odyssey.com for more information.
