Runner 100 To Compete In 100th Marathon

The competitor wearing badge number 100 will be taking part in his 100th marathon when the Beachy Head Marathon returns to the South Downs later this month.

The competitor wearing badge number 100 will be taking part in his 100th marathon when the Beachy Head Marathon returns to the South Downs later this month.

Nigel Webb, 54, has completed a staggering 99 marathon courses over the past 19 years with 49 of those achieved during the past four years! Setting himself a 100th milestone, the Beachy Head Marathon is Nigelâ€™s favourite and will see the keen sportsman take on the 26-mile cross country challenge on Saturday 25 October 2008 alongside 1,750 others travelling from across the globe to take part.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said â€œThis is a fantastic story and the fact that Nigel has picked the Beachy Head Marathon above routes all over the world for such a special occasion is testament to what a great event it is and why so many competitors return year after year. We have a real variety of people taking part, all with their own unique stories and raising money for very worthwhile causes. I would urge as many spectators as possible to get to Beachy Head and cheer on the competitors.â€

The Beachy Head Marathon also marked the 50th marathon course that Nigel completed back in 2004 and travelling across the world to clock up some impressive mileage, Nigel has covered over 1,200 miles in four years, including marathons in London, New York, Barbados, Snowdonia, Dublin and Benidorm.

Talking about his 100th marathon Nigel says â€œI chose this marathon because it is my all time favourite. I love the route, the scenery, the Piper, the brass band, the food stations, the Seven Sisters, the start and finish, the swim, the meal, and the overall atmosphere.â€

The Beachy Head Marathon takes place on Saturday 25 October 2008, and is organised by Eastbourne Borough Council and sponsored by Rix and Kay Solicitors and Eastbourne Hospitality Association (EHA).

Bruce Hayter, Managing partner from Rix & Kay is looking forward to the marathon: â€œWe are very proud to be sponsoring the marathon again this year and to be raising funds for such important charities.â€

Youngsters will also be taking part this year in the special Junior Challenge. Following a successful first year in 2007, juniors are invited to take on their own version of the Beachy Head Marathon in shortened two and three kilometre races.

The Mayor will officially start the 2008 Beachy Head Marathon at 9am sharp outside St. Bedeâ€™s School and spectators can come along to the start line to cheer on participants and take in spectacular views of the South Downs.
