Stellenbosch University Sport Science Dept seeks research volunteers

To investigate recovery techniques in long distance runners after a marathon race and to investigate recovery modalities in long distance runners after an ultramarathon race.

Stellenbosch University Sport Science Department would like to invite experienced runners to participate in one of two research projects.

 

Research project A

Objective: To investigate recovery techniques in long distance runners after a marathon race.

 

Commencing: January 2009 until end February 2009 (recruitment Des 2008 - Jan. 2009)

 

Participants must be:

  • Between the ages of 30 - 55 years
  • Men
  • Train 4 times a week
  • Participated in at least one marathon in the three months before the study
  • Run a marathon under 04:00:00

 

Unfortunately runners may not participate in this study, if they:

  • are on chronic medication
  • suffer from musculoskeletal, metabolic and endocrine problems, cardiovascular- and/or cardiorespiratory disorders in the three months before the study.
  • participate in lower body weight training in the 3 months prior to the project.

 

Participants will receive a voucher for the following on completion of the project:

  • Two 30 minute sport massages
  • Dietetic analysis - sports nutrition program and individual analysis
  • Maximum aerobic capacity test with lactate threshold analysis
  • Report with training heart rate zones and guidelines
  • Body composition analysis: fat%, fat free % and hydration status
  • Refund for the Marathon race's entry fee

 

Research project B

Objective: To investigate recovery modalities in long distance runners after an ultramarathon race.

 

Commencing: End January until after Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (15 April 2009)

 

Participants must be:

  • Between the ages of 30 - 55 years
  • Men
  • Train 4 times a week
  • Participated in at least one marathon in the three months before the study
  • Run a marathon under 04:00:00

 

Unfortunately runners may not participate in this study, if they:

  • are on chronic medication
  • suffer from musculoskeletal, metabolic and endocrine problems, cardiovascular- and/or cardiorespiratory disorders in the three months before the study.
