Kimberley Smith breaks own NZ Indoor mile record and highlights from Porritt Classic

BOSTON
Kimberley Smith set a fresh New Zealand indoor mile record at the Valentine Invitational indoor meeting in Boston on Friday evening.
Smith recorded 4m 24.14s, over six seconds faster than her own record and winning time and race record of 4m 30.61s set at the Boston meeting in 2004.
Smith also set an Oceania indoor record, breaking Sarah Jamieson of Australia's run of 4m 28.03s in Boston a year ago.
The States based Aucklander said that she didn't know what to expect going into the race.
"I didn't really know what to expect as I hadn't done a mile since College, when I ran the 4m 30s," said Smith.
"I am going to run the world indoors in Spain in the 3km. I've never run world indoors before, I want to make the final and see how it goes from there," she added.
Smith said that her confidence has received a great boost after the two mile world indoor record run behind Meseret Defar of Ethiopia in Boston two weeks ago.
Amy Mortimer of US was a distant second in the mile in 4m 33.80s. Lucy Van Dalen of Wanganui was fifth in 4m 46.32s.
Smith was also under the New Zealand outdoor national record of 4m 30.50s set by Christine Pfitzinger in Oregon in 1987.
At the same meeting Dana Hastie was seventh in 9m 41.46s and Holly Van Dalen 11th in 9m 53.54s in the 3000m.
Hayden McLaren broke Richard Kiplagat's 2006 meet record of 2m 21.54s in winning the 1000m in 2m 21.50s.

HAMILTON
Valerie Vili overcame a difficult week to win the shot put at the Porritt Classic meeting in Hamilton on Saturday evening.
The world shot put champion was out to 19.66m, a Beijing Olympic qualifying effort, but short of her New Zealand resident record of 20.20m and national record of 20.54m, set in winning the world title in Osaka last year. Vili bettered her meeting record of 18.97m set in 2005.
"That was pretty good considering the week I've had, my grandfather passed away and with family gatherings I did get some training in," said Vili.
"I had consistency right through the whole competition and I'm not disappointed. The energy levels are not 100 per cent, imagine what I'd do with 100 per cent," she said.
Vili's only European competition prior to the Olympics will be the world indoor championships in Valencia Spain next month.
Her programme leading up to Beijing has been mapped out to include a meeting in Sydney this Saturday, the Waitakere meeting on 19 February, and the Australian and New Zealand championships. In May Vili will travel up to Beijing for a dummy run at the Stadium.
Vili's only competition in the two months before the Games will be in Australia.
However after Beijing Vili will hit the European circuit and hopefully the world athletic final in Stuttgart in September.
"I'm really pleased where I'm at, and I've yet to move into real competition mode and gain competition fitness," said Vili.
Ana Po'uhila from the Oceania high performance training centre on the North Shore, set a Tongan record of 17.61m in coming second to Vili. Po'uhila also qualified to represent Tonga and join Vili in Beijing. In an earlier hammer competition Po'uhila set another Tongan record of 48.21m.
The star of the hammer throw was 17 year old Ayla Gill of Takapuna who won with 51.32m.
Stuart Farquhar, who has qualified for the Olympics, came through in the final round of the javelin to throw 81.25m, just short of another qualifying performance by 55cm.
"I'm pleased with that, my main focus was to maintain my form and achieve another 81.80m, I had two over 80 metres so I can't complain about that," he said.
It was Farquhar's third best ever effort and the greatest distance he has thrown in his hometown Hamilton.
National champion Keshia Grant of Hamilton set a meet record of 48.81m in winning the women's javelin.
Monique Williams erased Anna Smyth's 100m meeting record of 11.74s, with a convincing win in the 100m in a personal best of 11.71s. Williams later won the 400m in 54.43s.
The men's 100m field was reduced as first Matt Brown and then Craig Bearda were eliminated for false starts. When it eventually got underway Ben Potter came through to win in 10.85s. Brown received some consolation by going on to win the 200m in 21.20s.
World junior championship qualifying performances were put up by Auckland's Esther Keown 4m 26.16s and Hannah Barker of Whakatane 4m 27.81s in the 1500m and Sarah McSweeney of Morrinsville in the 3000m steeplechase in 10m 22.98s.
Nikki Hamblin of North Shore won the women's 1500m in 4m 23.43s with Aunese Curreen of Samoa holding out Jason Stewart in the men's 1500m in 3m 50.54s.
In the New Zealand combined events championships, run in conjunction with the meeting, Sarah Cowley, on target for a good score after day one in the women's heptathlon, struck disaster on day two when she no jumped in her three attempts in the long jump. Rebecca Wardell of Canterbury, aiming for a total of 6000 for Beijing selection, won the competition with 5626 points.

WELLINGTON
Dale Warrander won the Pelorus Trust City of Wellington half marathon, on Sunday, in 1h 8m 29s, beating Grant McLean 1h 12m 46s. Gabrielle O'Rourke won the women's section in 1h 21m 24s, two minutes ahead of Charlotte Wood. Bernie Portenski highlighted the masters women with her winning time of 1h 25m 43s in the 55-59 age group.

BULLER
Phil Costley was in a class of his own winning the annual Buller half marathon on Saturday in 1h 5m 31s. Glynn Hadley was second in 1h 11m 55s.
Shireen Crumpton won the women's half marathon in 1h 17m 17s, nearly seven minutes ahead of Taryn Beattie. The full marathon winners were Simon Mardon of Nelson 2h 37m 9s and Lisa Brignall of Christchurch 3h 16m 22s.

NEW YORK
Carl MacKenzie went close to becoming New Zealand's 33rd sub four minute miler, after finishing second in 4m 00.25s in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational indoor meeting in New York. He was beaten by Leonel Manzano of Texas in 3m 59.21s.

MELBOURNE
Shaun Kravitz won the Victorian State 3000m steeplechase championship in 9m 6.11s.
