2009 NWU-PUK SOUTH AFRICAN ATHLETICS ANNUAL

Khotso (Godfrey) Mokoena and René Kalmer have been selected as South African Athletes of the Year by the SA Athletics Statisticians (SAAS) and appear on the front and back cover of the 57th edition of the NWU-Puk SA Athletics Annual, which has just been published. The Annual, one of the oldest national athletics annuals in the world, has been enlarged to 240 pages and is again crammed with information on everything that happened on the athletics scene in South Africa and the rest of the world in 2008.

As usual, it contains all the best performances by South African senior, junior and youth athletes and road runners in 2008, as well as all-time lists; a Hall of Fame of the best of the best in the history of SA athletics; SA and all major international records; results of the most important local and international meetings; photographs of South Africa’s top athletes, and much more.

The 2009 edition also has an article discussing South Africa’s performances at the Beijing Olympics, one on exciting middle distance runner Juan van Deventer, and another on Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius.

Following his silver medal in the long jump at the Beijing Olympics and gold at the World Indoor Championships, Mokoena was an overwhelming choice as the SAAS Male Athlete of the Year for 2008.

On the women’s side Kalmer showed great determination to qualify for Beijing by clocking a personal best of 4:06.71 over 1500 m, and this, together with her versatility and domination of the road and cross-country scenes, contributed to her getting the nod as Female Athlete of the Year. Earlier in the year she impressively retained her 1500 m and 5000 m titles at the national championships.

For the first time a Coach of the Year Award has been made, and this went to Gerrie Coetzee, who coached Van Deventer and Kalmer.

The Editor of the Annual is Riël Hauman. Gert le Roux, the doyen of SA statisticians, was involved in the publication for the 50th consecutive time – a marvellous period of dedication to the sport.
