Legendry Australian fast bowler Jeff
Thomson has been appointed captain of the Australian team at the Bupa Great
Capital Run this September, renewing a long standing rivalry with England
captain Graham Gooch, who will be swapping his cricket whites for running shoes
to lead the English challenge.
Known to most as “Thommoâ€, he
was one of the fastest bowlers to have played Test cricket. With an unusual
slinging action, and an aggressive approach, he was a fearsome sight to
batsmen. In partnership with Dennis Lillee, he terrorised English batsmen in
the 1970’s and 80’s, once taking 33 wickets in a single series.
Having spent two decades bowling at speeds
of over 100mph, Thommo will be unable to run the 5km distance, but will be at
the London Regents
Park venue on Sunday September 13th
to encourage fellow Aussies in their competition against England and the Rest of the world.
He said “I’d love to see us put
one over England
again. I’ve got happy memories of playing cricket against the Poms and
seeing the look of terror in the eyes of their batsmen, so I’ll be there
to fire up team Australia
at the Bupa Great Capital Run.â€
The event has an entry limit of 5,000 and
will be over a distance of 5km and runners will be sent a technical t-shirt
with their colours of their chosen team pre race. All participants who run
under 40 minutes will count for the team challenge featuring Australia, England and the Rest of the World.
The Bupa Great Capital Run will also
feature elite representative teams.
