New Zealand Team to World Junior Champs
New Zealand will have a strong representation at the World Junior Athletic championships in Bydgoszcz Poland from 8 to 13 July.
New Zealand will have a strong representation at the World Junior Athletic championships in Bydgoszcz Poland from 8 to 13 July.
Six women and two men have been selected. Dominic Channon of Nelson, who competed with success at the recent World Cross Country championships in Edinburgh, will compete in the 5000m.
David Ambler of Christchurch has been selected in the 100m after recording 10.73s in the Australian championships in Brisbane in March.
Sarah McSweeney of Morrinsville has been selected in the 3000m steeplechase after setting a New Zealand W18 record of 10m 22.98s in Hamilton in February. There will be two representatives in the 1500m Hannah Barker of Whakatane and Esther Keown of Auckland. Angela Smit of Christchurch will compete in the 800m. Chelsea Johannsen of North Harbour has been selected for the 200m and Te Rina Keenan of Auckland in the discus throw.
Frazer Wickes of North Harbour qualified in the 400m and Andrea Koenen of Waitakere in the 200m, however both have withdrawn from the team.
The team will be managed by Beverley Peterson of Christchurch, three times New Zealand 100m champion in the 1980's.
