SOUTHLAND CENTENNIAL SHIELD RELAY - AUCKLAND
Esther Keown, in her first cross country outing coming off the track season showed good form with the fastest time around the 3000m circuit in the annual Southland Centennial Shield women's relay on Saturday. Keown, selected last week for the world junior track championships in Poland in July, gave her Auckland City Athletic Club the winning edge, after heading in the first lap in 10m 4s. Hannah Morgan increased their lead on the second lap and Kate Campbell held on to beat fast finishing Alice Mason who anchored the Pakuranga team home in 10m 17s. Auckland recorded 31m 22s, 13s ahead of Pakuranga with Pakuranga B third in 31m 57s.
Ryan Sissons gave the Pakuranga senior men a boost on the third lap of their five lap event. Sissons recorded the fastest time of the day with 9m 6s. Alex Parlane and Sam Dobson preceded Sissons and Paul Crowhurst and Matthew Sweetingham had no trouble bringing them through in a time of 46m 28s to beat their B team by over a minute.
Kerry Rodger ran 9m 7s, for the third year in a row to assist Auckland University to their ninth victory, in the last ten years, in the masters men. Simon Harvey running the final leg for Varsity just held out Auckland Club's Chris Trabing by two seconds for the win.
Pakuranga won the masters women and the junior relay.

GREGG'S WOMEN'S CHALLENGE - AUCKLAND
Nyla Carroll chalked up her third title in the annual women's challenge 8km road race from Newmarket to Mission Bay on Sunday.
The only opposition the 42 year old had was the buffeting head wind around Tamaki Drive from Mechanics Bay to the finish. As a result of the conditions Carroll recorded the slowest winning time in the 11 years of the event of 28m 35s, three minutes outside the race record held by Melodie Fairchild of US.
Sally Jackson was second in 29m 48s with Sarah Biss third in 30m 11s, out the field of over 2000.
In 2001 Carroll won in 26m 55s and in 2006 26m 47s.
Carroll said that it was good to be back running after an injury free period since November.
"I had August and September off, started walking in October, then running in November," said Carroll.
"I said to myself if I can complete the Waiheke Island run, which I did, I would run the Rotorua marathon," she added.
"So I hit it today, and I will now taper off for Rotorua."
Carroll won the tough Waiheke Island wharf to wharf 25km road race in January in 1h 44m 10s.

LONDON MARATHON
Phil Costley finished 23rd in the London Marathon recording 2h 20m 40s. Gavin Stevens won the 50-54 age group finishing 73rd in 2h 32m 26s. Grant McLean was 121st and 16th in the 40-44 age group in 2h 36m 24s, while Ben Ruthe was 583rd in 2h 52m 46s.
Martin Lel of Kenya won in 2h 05m 15s, which saw the first three finish in under 2h 6m. Irina Mikitenko of Germany won the women's section in 2h 24m 14s.
Meanwhile in the Rotterdam marathon William Kipsang of Kenya won in 2h 5m 49s and Lyubov Morgunova of Russia was the women's winner in 2h 25m 12s.

LOS ANGELES
Dominic Channon continued his impressive recent run by finishing second to Luke Puskedra in the 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational meeting in Los Angeles.
Puskedra recorded 8m 46.40s, with Channon running 8m 48s, 13 seconds faster than he ran in finishing third last year. Channon will return to the States, after the world junior championships in Poland, to take up an athletic scholarship at Providence College.   source ANZ
