World Indoor 1500m record holder  from Russia and World Indoor High Jump champion Stefan Holm from Sweden have been voted the European Athletes of the Month for March based on their outstanding results at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia.

Soboleva has been the revelation of the indoor season, breaking the world indoor 1500m record on two occasions including when she struck gold at the IAAF World Indoors in Valencia, along with Russian records in the mile and in the 800m.

The 25-year-old's seasons best performances of 1:56.49 for 800m, her world record of 3:57.71 for 1500m and 4:20.21 for the mile were all world leading performances in 2008 and place the last years world outdoor 1500m silver medallist as the strong favourite to strike Olympic gold at whatever distance she chooses.

Although the world indoor title was the first global title for Soboleva, Stefan Holm on the other hand confirmed his reputation as the "major championship king" with his fourth victory at the World Indoor Championships, this time clearing an impressive 2.36m clearance in Valencia.

Yelena SobolevaCurrently the defending Olympic champion, Holm is also defending European and now World Indoor champion and will be looking to become the first man in history to defend his Olympic High Jump title in Beijing in August.

Holm took part in 9 Indoor competitions in 2008 and emerged victorious in 8 making him a very worthy winner of the European Athlete of the Month for March.

The runners-up in the women's poll were Portugal's Naide Gomes who cleared 7.00m to win the Long Jump title in Valencia and Belgium's Tia Hellebaut who won the pentathlon while Britain's World Indoor triple Jump champion Phillips Idowu and Italian Marco Lingua took the minor placings in the men's poll.

The European Athlete of the Month initiative was launched in January 2007 and is designed to recognise outstanding performers at all levels of the sport in Europe.

European Athletics will name a male and female winner each month and feature the athlete on the European Athletics website. Selections are based on votes by the public, the media and a panel of European Athletics experts with each counting for 33.3% of the final vote. The winners will automatically be short listed for the European Athlete of the Year Award.
