The third event of USATF's 2005 Outdoor Championship Series, the Payton Jordan U.S. Open will be televised May 30 from 10-11:30 p.m., Eastern Time on ESPN2.

Eric Cross, a prominent middle and long distance running coach, died suddenly while out for his regular Sunday morning training session with his athletes. Cross, aged 60, had just run along Auckland's Tamaki Drive, from Kohimarama to St Heliers and was doing stretching exercises when he suddenly collapsed and died.

Sepeng Provisionally suspended by ASA
SouthAfrica, - Athletics South Africa (ASA) announced today that the IAAF has provisionally suspended Hezekiel Sepeng pending the analysis of the B-sample and or the outcome of the disciplinary hearing. Sepeng tested positive at an IAAF out-of-competition test, in February, in Potchefstroom. According to IAAF Rules, Sepeng has until 24 May 2005 to request a hearing.

INDIANAPOLIS-USA Track & Field announced Team USA's marathon representatives for the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics to be held in Helsinki, Finland August 6-14. Three team members, Jill Boaz, Kelly Keane and Clint Verran, have prior World Championships marathon experience, having been on the 2003 team that competed in Paris. The roster also includes 2001 USA men's champion Scott Larson. | more |
NZ Junior mile record holder wins in the States
Max Smith from Dunedin won the 1500m in 3m 43.96s at an invitational meeting at Brown University, Rhode Island. Smith, who holds the New Zealand junior mile record with 4m 1.15s, is on an athletic scholarship at Providence. Further performances by New Zealanders at the Stanford University meeting in California over the last weekend were Michael Aish 28m 7.33s for ninth place in the 10,000m and Michelle Prowse with a second in the B 1500m in 4m 25.63s.

Kimberley Smith sets NZ 10,000m record
Kimberley Smith set a New Zealand national 10,000m record of 31m 21.00s in finishing second at the Stanford University Cardinal Invitational meeting in California on Sunday. The former Auckland runner, now based in the States, improved on Nyla Carroll's record of 31m 28.12s set in Hechtel Belgium in 1997. The race was won by Amy Rudolph who ran the fastest time in the world this year of 31m 18.96s.
