As you are aware, representations by the Athletic Association
of Ireland to the Olympic Council of Ireland for the inclusion
of Olympic A qualified athlete Maria McCambridge and 3 B qualified
athletes (Peter Coghlan, Karen Shinkins and Tomas Coman) for
the Olympic Games in Athens have been rejected.
This rejection has been forthrightly outlined to the AAI
by the OCI .
While acknowledging that the OCI has clearly stated the position
on its final date for qualification and also its stance on
B qualified athletes, AAI feels there are convincing exceptional
circumstances to warrant the inclusion of the nominated athletes.
Furthermore the AAI is obliged to make the strongest possible
representations on behalf of its athletes and will continue
to do so.
While the OCI in its response has stated " that no further
correspondence or meetings will be entertained in these matters"
the AAI are still appealling to the OCI that in the best interest
of the Olympic Spirit that they reconsider their decision.
