Leevale's Mark Carroll ran a superb 13:18.75 for 5000m at
Stanford over the weekend to secure his Olympic qualification
for that event. Already holding the marathon standard from
2002, Carroll has now given himself the option to compete
over the distance at which he is Irish record holder and where
he won European Bronze in 1998 in Budapest. He finished 2nd
in the race to Kenya's Joseph Koskei who ran 13:16.83. The
next stage for the Corkman in his Olympic preparations may
well be to add the 10,000m qualifier to give him the full
quota of choice of distances for Athens.
If he decides to run the 5000m he will be joined by Leevale
clubmate Cathal Lombard and Alistair Cragg.
In Boston, meanwhile, Marie Davenport who recently scored
Olympic qualifying for the 10,000m, was agonisingly close
to adding the 5000m A standard to her collection as she ran
an excellent PB of 15:09.07 for 4th - a mere 0.37 of a second
outside the required time. The race was won by Marla Runyan
(USA) with the world's second fastest time of the year, 14:59.20.
