Jay Bawcom was born on the 28th August 1973 in Searcy, Arkansas,
USA. He attended Harding University, receiving his BA in English
in 1997.
As a youngster he participated in baseball and American football,
and he didn't begin running until age 23, after some college
friends suggested that they might try their hand at the marathon.
He has since finished the 1996, 1997, & 2001 Rocket City
Marathons in Huntsville, Alabama as well as the 2000 Shamrock
Sportfest Marathon in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the 1999
Marato De Catalunya in Barcelona.
With PR's of 18:30 5K, 36:12 10K, 1:38 for 1/2 Marathon,
and 3:57 for the marathon, Jay is more of a fitness/recreation
runner than a racer.
He went to Kenya in August of 2000 as a development missionary,
and while there became involved with the group that grew into
the Chepkero Athletics Club.
He is presently employed at Chino Valley High School, in
Arizona, where he teaches English and coaches track. Jay plans
to return to Kenya in the fall of 2002 to devote his time
to the Chepkero AC and Homestretch Ministries.
In addition to his interest in running, Jay enjoys weight
lifting, travel, trekking, fly fishing, guitar, reading and
photography.
With great appreciation we welcome Jay Bawcom to the pages
of Time-to-Run
