This year's Malta Amateur Athletic Association Road Running league kicked off with the first race at Ghajn Tuffieha. A sizeable crowd turned out on the day to cheer on the approximately 150 athletes coming from the nine affiliated different clubs;. A.S. Libertas, All Comers Alloysians, Birkirkara St.Joseph A.C., Ladies' Running Club, La Sale Tristar, Mellieha A.C, St. Patrick's AC., Starmax AC, Savio College AC and Zurrieq Wolves.
The most contested race was the 2k run for the younger athletes which included a good number of new faces on the boys' side from Savio College. In fact, the first contestant to finish the race was Karsten Gatt coming from Savio college in a time of 7.37 minutes followed by Jean Paul Farrugia of La Sal Tristar and Daniel Cilia from St. Paul"s Missionary College. Yana Pace of Athleta Pembroke finished first on the girls side in a time of 7.52 min, second Marie Sciberras, AS Libertas and Denise Law Athleta Pembroke crossed the finish line 3 rd .
In the youth category, Glen Vella led from gun to tape to win his first race and set a new course record in an excellent time of 12.05 minutes, some 73 seconds ahead of Christian Formosa of St. Patricks AC. Alexander Cini, La Sale Tristar third.
On the girls' side Marouska Cutajar of Athleta Pembroke took victory with a time of 4.04 minutes, with Roberta Schembri of Athleta Pembroke second and Lara Vella of St. Patrick's AC third.
The decrease in intermediate athletes could be noticed in the 5Km race where approximately 15 athletes ran the course. Kurt Xerri made an impressive run when he finished the race in 17.46 min followed by his clubmate Kurt Law with Clive Falzon of Savio College third. The Athleta Pembroke athlete Lorna Mifsud made her way to the finishing line in a time of 22.12 minutes followed by Marie Felice and Emma Jo Vassallo.
Gerald Grech of A.S. Libertas was a convincing overall winner of this year's senior 10km road race when he broke the tape in a good time of 32.51 min followed by Jonathan Balzan of St.Patrick"s A.C. and Mark Herrera again of Athleta Pembroke.
In the women's senior 10km race , the outstanding athlete Carol Galea led the pack to cross the finish line and win the race in 37.18min followed by Lisa Marie Bezzina and Cecilia Fenech.
