Run for Fun: The McDonald's Olympic Day Run 2004
In line with the spirit of the moment, this year being the
year of the Olympics and EU dedicated year to European Year
of Education through Sport; the Malta Olympic Committee are
welcoming schools, sporting bodies, local councils, clubs,
teams, athletes and the general public to come along and join
us in promoting the importance of an active lifestyle by participating
in the annual Olympic Day Run.
Every year during the month of June the National Olympic
Committees worldwide celebrate the Olympic Day Run in honor
of the foundation of the International Olympic Committee and
the re-establishment of the Olympic Games, which took place
on June 23rd, 1894.
This year's run will be sponsored by McDonald's as part of
their initiative to encourage the public to "Go Active".
This sponsorship showcases McDonald's ongoing commitment to
a balanced, active lifestyle and the spirits and ideals of
the Olympic
Games.
Accordingly McDonald's together with the Malta Olympic Committee
in collaboration with the MAAA's are ready to go active with
the celebration of this year's McDonald's Olympic Day Run,
which will take place on the 20th June at 8.30am in Valletta.
This year's route has been split into three routes which
both start and finish at McDonalds in Republic Street; for
kids under 12 - 2k, for those over 12 including parents, friends
and athletes - 3k, for the serious runner a picturesque route
around the bastions - 5k. As usual official Olympic Day Run
T-shirts will be given to all participants including an official
Olympic Day Run IOC Certificate signed by the President of
the IOC Dr. Jacques Rogge.
The general public is invited to celebrate the year of the
Olympics by joining our National athletes and the Malta Team
for the Olympic Games; in a symbolic gathering of athletes
to either participate or support in the Olympic Day Run and
by doing so help promote an active lifestyle.
The objective of this run is to support the goals of the
Olympic Movement and the ideals of Olympism: exalting and
combining a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and
mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism,
seeks to create a way of life based on joy found in effort,
educational value of good example and respect for universal
fundamental ethical principles.
Get ready to see some surprise guests including Ronald McDonald
and a number of top Maltese athletes; more of this will be
revealed closer to the date of the run. Participation is free
of charge.
Applications are readily available at any McDonald's restaurants.
