EASTER ISLAND, Chile (June 2005) –– Ever since its Greek genesis in 490 BC, the marathon event has surfaced in every conceivable metropolis, latitude, longitude and crevice of the world.

New Champions in ING Ottawa Marathon
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The excitement was palpable at the 31st ING Ottawa Marathon today as David Cheruiyot, a 35-year old from Kenya, took first place with a time of 2:14:20.3, beating John Itati (2:14:46.6) also from Kenya and Danny Kassap (2:15:12.6) of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Last year’s winner and course record holder Elly Rono finished fifth with a time of 2:16:47.3. Victoria native, Jim Finlayson, 32, captured his first Canadian title (seventh overall) with a time of 2:18:20.7. He was followed by Kitimat’s Ryan Day, 22, (2:19:55.0) and Toronto’s Matthew McInnes, 30, (2:21:45.2).

Gebrselassie to race Amsterdam Marathon in October 24 May
Amsterdam - Holland - It was announced yesterday that Haile Gebrselassie would participate in the 30th edition of the ING Amsterdam Marathon on 16 October 2005.

Enschede Marathon : John Kelai of Kenya wins in 2:11:44 May
Enschede, The Netherlands - John Kelai of Kenya who ran the fastest 15kms of this year in Maastricht on 24 April with 43:16 was an outstanding winner of the 37th edition of a cold (10 degrees CT) and windy ING Bank Enschede Marathon on Sunday 8 May. The 28 year-old overcame a fall on the slippery course at 40 kms to win in 2:11:44.

Hamburg Marathon: Masai wins debut and Rey returns for win April
Hamburg, Germany – Spain’s Julio Rey won the Hamburg Marathon in 2:07:38 finishing just eleven seconds off the pace of his two-year-old course record. In the women’s race in the 30th edition of the marathon, three-time World Cross Country short race champion Edith Masai of Kenya made a promising debut at the distance with a 2:27:06 win. | more |

Rono leads Kenyan sweep at Madrid Marathon
MADRID, Spain - Daniel Rono captured the Madrid Marathon on Sunday in his first attempt at the distance, winning a race in which Kenyan men swept the first eight spots. Larissa Malikova of Russia broke the women's race record. Rono was timed in 2:12:29 for the 26.2 miles, making an impressive final burst. He was followed by John Kirui (2:13:29) and Willy Cheruiyot (2:13:34). In all, Africans, took the top 10 places. Malikova finished in 2:33:27, the third year in a row the women's record has been beaten. Spaniards Sonia Martin (2:50:34) and Luna Garcia-Miguel (2:56:50) were second and third.
