In November 1976 at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle Street, five key founders of what would become The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon met to begin discussions and planning.

September 1977 saw the first running of the event under the name, the Mayor Daley Marathon, with 4200 runners participating. This was to be the first event which has grown into what we know as The Chicago Marathon and is now a familiar fixture on the October race calendar. [more history]

Cheruiyot and Adere Win the 2006 Chicago Marathon
CHICAGO (October 22, 2006) -- Robert K. Cheruiyot (KEN) outsprinted Daniel Njenga (KEN) today to win an exciting LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in two hours, seven minutes 35 seconds. In the women's race, Berhane Adere (ETH) stayed back and attacked late to win in 2:20:42. Galina Bogomolova (RUS) was second in 2:20:47 and Benita Johnson (AUS) moved up to third in 2:22:36.

Chicago Announces American Development Program for 2006
CHICAGO - (July 20, 2006) - In an effort to further encourage the development of U.S. athletes The 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon will offer $80,000 in bonuses to this year's top American finishers. Also, any U.S. citizen completing the 26.2-mile course under the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying time will be awarded an additional time bonus.
