Resolution Health presents the fastest marathon in Africa

Cape Town, South Africa, February 15, 2005 – THE PUMA Peninsula Marathon took place on Sunday in near perfect conditions with a gentle cooling breeze accompanying runners along the picturesque route from Green Point to Simon’s Town.

Neo Molema defended his title with a winning time of 2:18:26 to claim the R10 000 first prize in the men’s marathon. Molema saw off the challenge of second placed Aaron Khoza and Bonisile Ngculana who placed third.

Zimbabwean Tabitha Tsatsa also won R10 000 when she topped the women’s field in 2:44:54. She was followed home by Karen Little and Ursula Frans.

The half-marathon, from the Bergvliet Sport Club to Simon’s Town, was won by Gilbert Mutandiro ahead of Mphuthumi Mgedle and Zolani Ntongana. Comrades champion Vladimir Kotov finished seventh.

Theresa Fourie was more than a minute ahead of Anneline Roffey in the women’s half-marathon, winning in a time of 1:20:57. Nomvuyisi Seti was third.

The event drew 3526 entrants, up from last year’s 2347, and one of the day’s biggest cheers was reserved for 70-year-old Alec Jones. Jones, the founder of the PUMA Peninsula Marathon way back in 1964, completed the marathon in 4:38.

The marathon, hosted by Mr Price Celtic Harriers, was not held between 1994 and 1997 but was resurrected in 1998 and has thrived because of PUMA and supporting sponsors the Cape Times, Powerade, Runner’s World and Totalsports. The event also has a new presenting partner in Resolution Health.

The PUMA Peninsula Marathon benefited two charities this year: the Beth Uriel Home in Salt River which caters for abandoned youth aged 15 to 22 and the Cape Times Fresh Air Fund which sponsors holiday camps for needy boys and girls.
