2002 will be remembered as the Year of the Women. The year that Kenya's Margaret Okayo moved the Women's Course Record to new heights and the year that defending Champion, Rodgers Rop met his nemesis in the form of countrymen, Martin Lel.

Weather conditions were far warmer than a year ago, and the Women benefitted by the 30 minute earlier start than the men. Temperatures rose through the course of the event, on the traditional 1st Sunday of November.

More than 30 000 entrants were to enjoy the 5 burroughs city event, with the colours of Autumn greeting them on their homeward bound journey in Central Park.
