The petite Russian ultra athlete Natalia Volgina has announced
that she will be back to defend her title in the Ladies Ultra
Marathon category of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon on
Saturday 19 April 2003.
Natalia and her husband, Alexei Volgin, will line up at the
start on race day along with fellow Russian Alena Vinitskaya,
who finished third in the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in
2002. Vinitskaya is in good form this year, having won the
San Diego Marathon in January, finishing second at the Miami
Tropical Marathon on 2 February and finishing third in the
Motorola Marathon in Texas on 16 February.
The trio will run in Harmony Gold colours, along with talented
South African runners Farwa Mentoor from Western Province,
29-year old Frank Pooe and well-known Capetonian Donavon Wright
who has successfully recuperated from a brain tumor operation.
Harmony Gold also sponsors the gold medals for the top ten
men and women at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, as well
as the two ten-ounce gold bars valued at R25 000 for the male
and female course record breakers.
Chairman of Harmony Athletic Club, Nick Bester said, "Although
we're bringing out international runners to take part in the
Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, our focus is also on developing
our local talent. As in the mining industry, team work is
very important, so we'll be going for the team prizes at the
Two Oceans. This includes men, ladies and veterans."
