Berlin, Germany - Months in advance Kenyan Paul Tergat
planned for his assault on the World Record 2:05.38 held by
Khallid Khannouchi. The Kenyan who had, suprisingly, yet to
win a race over the distance previously, was determined to
go one better in every aspect.
With the pacesetting duties being delivered with caution
and precision, they passed through 21k on target and 30 km
in 1:29:24, perfectly poised to hopefully accelerate over
the final 10K, which is known to favour the runners.
38 km was passed in a superb 1:52:38.
And this they did, with a majestic Paul Tergat bounding to
a New World Record and in the process showing the World what
a truly remarkable athlete he is. Sammy Korir the designated
pacemaker, chose to race over the final 10K's providing Tergat
with unexpected competition as the pair sped towards the 2:05
barrier.
Tergat had to dig deep for this victory as the 2 ran side
by side over the final 1500m, and in the process the records
came tumbling down. The lanky Tergat attacked with 1K to go
with Korir not able to respond to blister to a time of 2:04:55
The Berlin course is known for its speed however this is pure
brilliance. Korir finishes in a staggering 2:04:56.
The Women's race was won by Yasuko Hashimoto (Japan) - 2:26:32
