Maria Mutola and Justin Gatlin were the top prize-money winners in track and field in 2003, according to a survey by The Track Profile News Service. A total of more than $26 million in prize money and bonuses was paid out.

Mozambique's Mutola also became the first sole winner of the IAAF Golden League $1 million jackpot. Her total prize money for the year was at least $1 330 624.
US sprinter Gatlin won $500 000 in the Moscow Challenge, giving him a total of at least $602 205 for the year.

Second on the men's earnings list was Hicham El Guerrouj ($279 841), followed by triple jumper Christian Olsson ($254 304). El Guerrouj's fellow-IAAF Athlete of the Year, South Africa's Hestrie Cloete, followed Mutola on the women's list with $323 560. World pole vault champion Svetlana Feofanova was third ($318 884).

A total of 27 men worldwide earned $100 000 or more, while only 19 women did the same.
