Nick Willis will run the 1500m at the world athletic championships in Helsinki in early August.
Willis has been added to the initial selections made by Athletics New Zealand last week.
Convenor of Athletics New Zealand selectors Dave Norris said that it was unfortunate there had been a delay in naming Willis.
"We wished to establish which events Nick was wanting to compete in, as he has qualified in both the 800m and 1500m," said Norris.
Willis, who is based in the States, has proven in recent months that he should be a definite finalist in the 1500m at Helsinki, on August 10.
In early February he ran 3000m indoors in 7m 48.65s and last month, at an indoors relay meeting in Pennsylvania, ran 1600m in 3m 55.1s, a mile in 3m 56.2s and an 800m in 1m 48.6s, all within a period of 48 hours.
