Shireen Crumpton ran a personal best marathon time of 2h 37m 3s in finishing 33rd at the world athletic championships in Helsinki.

This time clips 21 seconds off her winning time in the New Zealand championship in Christchurch in early June.

Crumpton was through the half way in 1h 17m 34s, together with fellow team member Liza Hunter-Galvan.

The 34 year old Dunedin nurse led New Zealand to seventh place in the teams competition, with Hunter-Galvan 39th in 2h 39m 47s and Rebecca Moore 45th in 2h 50m 36s. The world cup teams competition was won by Kenya from Japan and Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Unfortunately New Zealand's fourth team member Kay Ulrich withdrew around the 27km mark after having gone through the half way mark in 1h 19m 46s.

Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain set a championship record with her winning time of 2h 20m 57s. Radcliffe covered the first half in 1h 9m 49s, which was a minute faster than Nina Rillstone's New Zealand record.

On the final day of the championships Rachid Ramzi of Bahrain made it a double adding the 800m title, in 1m 44.24s, to the 1500m won earlier.

Australia's Craig Mottram was third in the 5000m final in 13m 32.96s, having run 13m 12.93s in the qualifying heats.

New Zealand and Australia finished 33rd equal, along with six other countries, on the medal table with a bronze medal each. United States of America were first on the table with 14 gold, eight silver and three bronze.
