Milers will be chasing a sub four minute mile as well as a big pay out in the inaugural mile race at Waitakere Stadium on Saturday night.

With the incentive of $8000 in prize money Tom Mayo, Ben Ruthe, Dale Summerville and Gareth Hyett should provide an exciting race in the Genesis Energy sponsored event.

The race is part of an evening at the ground for the annual Waitakere fireworks display.

The carrot offered to achieve a sub four minute mile is $3000 for first, $2000 for second and $1000 for third with a bonus of $2000, to the winner only, if the finishing time is under four minutes.

Mayo is the fastest in the field with a best mile of 3m 55.1s and 1500m of 3m 38s, in England. Mayo, now living in Auckland, represented England at the Manchester Commonwealth Games. He was eighth in the final of the 1500m in 3m 41.70s.

Ruthe, the New Zealand road champion and 2002 New Zealand 1500m champion has a best 1500m time of 3m 41.22s..

Summerville a world university games 5000m representative in Turkey in August, has run 1500m in 3m 44.1s.

Hyett, New Zealand 800m champion for the last two years has a best 1500m of 3m 51.60s.

Also on the programme is a women's 5000m, sponsored by the Waitakere Lions Club, featuring world mountain running champion Kate McIlroy.

McIlroy will be attempting to run faster than 15m 25s, to secure an early qualifying performance for selection to the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. This race also carries good prize money with $3000 for first, $1500 for second and $500 for third.
The 5000m starts at 7pm and the mile at 7.40pm.
