Nina Rillstone of Auckland ran one of the fastest marathons by a New Zealander in her debut at the 42.2km distance, running 2h 29m 46s in the Nagano Olympic Commemorative marathon in Japan on Sunday.
Rillstone, fresh from her 15th place at the world cross country championships in Fukuoka two weeks ago, covered the first half of the race in 76m and came home over the second half in under 74m.
Rillstone who turned 31 on Saturday now comes in fifth on the all time rankings headed by Allison Roe with 2h 26m 46s.
Her coach John Bowden of Auckland is delighted with the news.
"It would be the fastest debut by a New Zealand woman and the fastest by a New Zealander for a least ten years," said Bowden.
"Nina may run the New York marathon in November or the Osaka marathon in January," he added.
Meanwhile in Canberra on Sunday last week Shireen Crumpton won the women's section of the Canberra Marathon in 2h 42m 55s and former New Zealander Mark Hutchinson, now living in Queensland, won the inaugural Australian 50km championship in 3h 9m 5s.
Bernardine Portenski added another world age group running record to her collection with a world 55-59 10,000m record of 37m 22.37s at Newtown Park Wellington on Sunday.
Portenski cut 25 seconds off the previous record held by Edeltraud Pohl of Germany since 1992.
The 56 year old said that she attempted the record two months ago, but missed out.
"I've been freshening up for the Rotorua Marathon, so I thought I was in the right shape to have a go again," she said.
Portenski now holds the world record in the 55-59 age group over the mile, 3000m, 5000m and now the 10,000m.
"I would like to get the marathon record as well, but it is a pretty tough time of 2h 51m.
"If I survive Rotorua, I might go on and at crack at the record in the Christchurch marathon in early June," said Portenski.
Counties Manukau won the interprovincial teams event for athletes aged 12 and 13, at Ericsson Stadium over the weekend.
