New Zealand Athletics

Gareth Hyett ran the fastest 800m by a New Zealander in New Zealand in six years after clocking 1m 47.85s in Wanganui last evening.

The previous recent best in New Zealand was by Mark Rodgers who won the national title in Christchurch in March 2000 in 1m 47.61s, beating Shaun Farrell who ran 1m 47.67s.

Hyett will compete in the Australian 800m championship in Sydney over the weekend, with heats on Saturday and the final on Sunday. He will be chasing the Commonwealth Games selection standard of 1m 46.60s. Hyett is also down for the Mayoral mile in Wanganui the following Saturday.

Other New Zealand athletes in action at the Australian championships will be, tomorrow; Sarah O'Connell in the 400m hurdles, Melina Hamilton in the pole vault, Matt Brown, Chris Donaldson, David Falealili, Sam Fogal, Donald MacDonald, Nick Madgwick, James Mortimer, Dallas Roberts and Carl Van der Speck in the 100m, Chantal Brunner, Andrea Miller, Jessica Penney and Monique Williams in the 100m, Cory Innes in the 400m, Jane Arnott, Charlotte Osborne and Williams in the 400m, and Jess Ruthe in the 10,000m. On Friday Beatrice Faumuina will compete in the discus, Brunner, Jenni Dryburgh and Penney in the long jump,Nic O'Brien in the 400m hurdles, Stuart Farquhar in the javelin, Angela McKee and Marissa Pritchard in the high jump, and Dale Warrander in the 10,000m. Competing on Saturday Carma Watson in the 20km road walk, Daniel O'Dwyer in the wheelchair sprints, Cameron Calkoen and Matt Slade in the ambulant sprints, Mortimer in the 110m hurdles, Penney and Williams in the 200m, Brown, James Dolphin, Donaldson, Falealili, Fogal, Innes, MacDonald, Roberts, Adam Somerville and Van der Speck in the 200m, Francois Coetzee in the long jump and Fiona Crombie in the 5000m. On Sunday those who make it through to the finals will be competing along with JB Nel in the pole vault, Andrea Miller in the 100m hurdles, Rebecca Forlong and Kate McIlroy in the 3000m steeplechase and Rees Buck in the 5000m.
