Andrea Miller and Max Smith through to finals at World University Championships
Andrea Miller and Max Smith made the finals of their respective events after the first day of track and field competition at the World University Games in Bangkok yesterday.
Miller is through to the final of the 100m hurdles.
She finished fourth in her semi-final in 13.30s (+0.5), which was won by Nevin Yanit of Turkey in 13.09s. Miller was just one hundredth of a second outside her New Zealand national record.
Earlier Miller had finished third in her heat in a legal 13.33s.
Smith ran a well judged 1500m race to finish fourth in a fast heat, recording 3m 43.68s. He remained handy all the way, finishing just outside the first three automatic qualifiers, but Smith qualified easily as one of the fastest remaining runners. He takes his place in the 12 man final in three days time.
James Mortimer missed by six hundredths of a second making the final of the 110m hurdles, after finishing fifth in his semi-final in 13.83s. In the heats Mortimer was third in 13.81s (-0.7).
In the long jump qualifying rounds where the qualifying mark was 6.20m, Jessica Penney no jumped in the first round. In round two Penney was out to 6.06m (-0.2), but had a no jump in the final round and did not advance.
