New Zealand Athletics

 


New Zealand will have three representatives in athletics at the world university games in Bangkok Thailand in August.

Monique Williams of Hamilton follows up her success at the New Zealand and Australian track and field championships with selection in the 200m (23.51s) and 400m (52.74s). At the New Zealand championships in March Williams won five gold medals, the sprint treble and in both relays and at the Australian championships won the 200m and was runner up in the 400m.

Jessica Penney of Wellington will compete in the long jump. Penney was fifth at the world junior championships last year in Beijing setting a New Zealand W19 record of 6.37m. At the New Zealand championships Penney won both the senior and W19 long jump titles.

Andrea Miller of Dunedin has been selected for the 100m hurdles. Miller set a New Zealand record of 13.29s in finishing third in the Australian championships, a week after winning the New Zealand title in Inglewood.

At the 2005 world university games in Turkey Kimberley Smith won the 5000m in a games record time.

The games in Bangkok run from 8 to 18 August.
