Nick Willis wins the Kip Keino mile

Commonwealth Games 1500m gold medallist Nick Willis won the Kip Keino mile at the Harold Porter Track at the Ithaca High School in New York on Sunday.

In windy conditions Willis recorded 4m 00.29s.

Willis said that the race went really well.

"It was windy so slowed the pace significantly and gave me some good race practice. I waited till the last 120m and beat them by 2 seconds, so I'm really happy with my top end speed," said Willis.

Willis has now decided to race the 1500m instead of the 3000m in Los Angeles next Sunday.

Blicoe wins Shirley Mae 5km run

Adrian Blincoe won the Shirley Mae 5km run on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City on Saturday. Blincoe ran 14m 30s. John Henwood was second in 14m 55s.

Henshaw second in the 1500m

Edwin Henshaw finished second in the 1500m in 3m 45.09s and third in the 5000m in 14m 15.88s at the Conference USA Champs in Houston Texas. At the same meet Simon Bucknell was seventh in the 1500m in 3m 52.36s, but failed to finish the 5000m.

Shaun Krawitz was 14th in the 3000m steeplechase in 9m 11.28s at the ECAC and IC4A track and field at Princeton University in New Jersey.

Dobson wins HEB cross country for 3rd time

Sam Dobson made it three years in a row at the annual HEB cross country race held for the first time at the A and P showgrounds in Pukekohe on Saturday.

Dobson had a tough battle with Andrew Haigh and 45 year old Kerry Rodger over the tough hilly course. With 1000m remaining Dobson broke clear and held on to win the 7.5km event by two seconds over Haigh in 24m 58s. Rodger was a further two seconds back in third.

American Lara Phillips won the women's 5km in 19m 22s, beating women 19 winner Katie Wright by 10 seconds. Phillips, from Connecticut, has lived in Auckland for three years and is coached by Barry Magee. Last Sunday Phillips won the annual YMCA women's 10km road race, in Cornwall Park, in 37m 51s.

National junior cross country champion Mathew Mildenhall beat the national junior mountain running champion Aaron Jackson in the M19 race covering the 5km in 16m 19s.

Tauranga Ramblers win Cross country relays

At the annual Cambridge cross country relays on Saturday Tauranga Ramblers finished first and second in the open men's 4 x 3km. Ben Ruthe running in the A and B teams had the top two fastest individual laps of 9m 18s and 9m 24s. Sarah McSweeney, in the winning Hamilton Hawks team, ran the fastest individual women's lap of 11m 20s.

Holden wins 6000m event

In the annual Hastings Harrier Club United steeplechase meeting at HB showgrounds in Hastings on Saturday, James Holden won the men's 6000m event in 20m 19s. Andrea Williams led in the women's 4500m steeplechase in 18m 19s. A top performance came from Lynda Diver in the W16 3000m steeplechase, winning in 10m 55s. Ashley Aitken won the W19 3000m steeplechase in 10m 56s.

Hellier revels in throws

At the New Caledonia throwers cup meeting in Noumea last week, New Zealand shot put and discus champion Pat Hellier was out to 15.74m in the shot put and 50.66m in the discus. Hellier from Pakuranga won the four throwing events competition on points after his javelin throw of 54.27m and hammer throw of 59.65m were added in. North Harbour's Johan Smalberger won the men under 23 competition and Cliff Weston of North Harbour was third, his best performance being in the javelin with 65.19s. Ana Po'uhila and Tereapii Tapoki, who attend the IAAF Oceania high performance training centre on the North Shore, were second and third respectively in the women's event. Po'uhila was out to her second best shot put of 16.83m while in an earlier competition in Noumea Tapoki produced her second best discus of 55.90m.
