World University Games team shows good form in warm-up competition
Track and field athletes in the New Zealand team to the World University Games in Bangkok starting 8 August, put in some impressive performances at a warm up meeting on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Monique Williams was second over 100m in a wind assisted 11.95s (+2.3) and won the 200m in a legal 24.29s (+0.2).
James Mortimer twice raced in his specialty event the 110m hurdles, clocking a legal 14.25s (+1.8) and a wind assisted 13.96s (+2.2). Mortimer also won the 200m in 21.33s (nwi).
Andrea Miller sped to her third fastest time ever in the 100m hurdles winning in a legal 13.36s (+0.9).
Jessica Penney, had problems with her run-up in the long jump with her only recorded jump of 5.56m placing her second.
Amanda King won the 3000m steeplechase in 10m 31.64s.
Mortimer, King and Penney compete again on Thursday, before heading to Singapore to join Miller and Williams for a week's training and acclimatising.
The sixth member of the track and field team, Max Smith is competing in Europe before travelling on to Thailand for the Games. Smith ran a fast mile of 3m 56.46s in Belgium on Saturday.
Meanwhile at the Brasschaat meeting James Dolphin also competed over 200m where he finished third in 21.00s (-0.6). And at the British Milers Club GP meeting in Solihull UK, Brett Smith also competed in the 3000m finishing 18th in 8m 15.27s. Also on Saturday John Henwood won the Run for Central Park 6.4km road race in New York in 19m 38s.
