Athletics Auckland Grand Prix XC, Lloyd Elsmore Park Pakuranga – 9 May 2015
Former national junior cross country champion Matt Baxter stamped his authority on the senior ranks in emphatic fashion with a convincing victory in the opening race of the Auckland grand prix series at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturday. The 20 year old led from start to finish extending his lead throughout the 7km to finish in 22:29. Mike Banks was second in 23:22, nine seconds ahead of Tom Hunt.
Baxter’s previous major success in Pakuranga was in 2012 in winning the New Zealand secondary schools cross country title held at St Kentigern College grounds.
Rebecca Fogarty, winner of the Kerikeri half marathon in November, made it two years in a row in the senior women’s 5km. Fogarty (26) recorded 18:29. Ashleigh Williams, third last year, was second in 19:05s, with Emily Roughan runner up last year collecting third in 20:23. WELLINGTON
University Relays, McKays Crossing, Paekakariki – 9 May 2015
After a close race a fortnight ago at the Shaw Baton, Wellington Scottish’s senior men faced another challenge from a Marcus Karamanolis-led band of Wellington Harrier juniors at the University Relay on Saturday. This time Karamanolis (12:48) used the first 3.9km lap to open up an 18 second lead on Scottish’s Dougal Thorburn. However, the next two Scottish runners, Nick Horspool (13:10) and John Earles (13:21) slowly closed and then reversed the gap, and Scottish eventually won comfortably, on the back of a strong anchor lap from Tim Hodge (13:03). Wellington were second in the senior men with Scottish B third. Wellington juniors were clear winners of the junior men’s grade beating their B team by over three minutes with Olympic third.
Scottish’s senior women did not face such a challenge, with Nicole Mitchell running fastest lap (15:25) and quickly opening up a lead of a minute on her chasers on the first lap. The rest of the team of Ariana Harper (15:45), Hinano Andrews (17:17) and Amanda Broughton (16:52) continued to extend the lead to win by three minutes over their nearest rivals, the Wellington Tri Club. Olympic won the junior women’s title despite a blazing 15.30 lap from Kelsey Forman for second-placed Wellington.
Scottish masters men, led by Todd Stevens (14.34) picked up the M40 title, although Mike Waterman (14.22) running the anchor leg for Olympic, nearly caught them at the end. Scottish won the Masters Women’s grade thanks to strong last lap from Lindsay Barwick (17.30), helping them to beat a Michelle van Looy (17.09) led Olympic team. Renae Creaser from Kapiti had the fastest lap of the day (16.45).
Olympic narrowly beat Wellington Harriers in the M50 grade with Paul Sharp’s 15.23 lap giving Wellington a lead that they held until Mark Handley took it on the last lap, to win by 12 seconds.
