Monique Williams produced a superb finish to win the women's 400m in 53.93s at the inaugural Athletics Australia Cup contest in Brisbane.

Gareth Hyett was also in winning form, in the hot blustery conditions, holding out Victoria's Jeff Riseley to win the 1500m in 3m 44.27s.

Jessica Penney was second in the long jump with a wind assisted 6.26m.

Third placings went to Melina Hamilton in the pole vault and Stuart Farquhar in the javelin throw.

New Zealand finished third in the contest scoring 62 points. Victoria won with 66, Queensland were second on 63.

Team manager Raylene Bates said that the contest was very close throughout the competition

"The teams points see-sawed all afternoon in the race to win the $5000 prize money and inaugural trophy with the eventual winner of the competition coming down to the winner of the women's long jump," said Bates

"Jessica Penny lead the long jump right up to the last round only to be beaten by Lauren Boden by 2cm, however Jessica produced a season best with 6.26m showing she is coming back to the form which took her to fifth placing at the world junior championships held in Beijing in 2006."
