Kimberley Smith slashed seven seconds off her New Zealand national 5000m record after finishing second in the IAAF Golden League meeting in Rome last evening.

Smith ran 14m 49.41s, carving 7.17s off her own record set in Brussels in August last year.

The race was won by 23 year old Mariem Alaoui Selsouli of Morocco in 14m 36.52s.

Smith is just under two seconds outside the Oceania record held by Benita Johnson of Australia.
