The Telstra Selection Trials and 85th Australian Championships continued in Brisbane today with a sensational night of athletics highlighted by the fastest 100 metres ever run by an Australian in Australia.

A total of six A-qualifying performances were produced, six metres was within reach in the pole vault and Mark Fountain received a golden 1500m birthday present in a magnificent evening.

Josh ‘The Boss’ Ross set a personal best in the semi-final of 10.11sec, then again in the final with 10.08sec (+1.9m) and showed off his new dance, ‘the heartbeat’ to the delight of the screaming Brisbane crowd. “I always knew I could go that quick. I wasn’t concentrating on the time, I was just concentrating on my race and executing it and the time came,” he said.

Undefeated in Australian Championship finals, Ross has now proved he can run very fast when it counts, even after a false start, running the fastest time by an Australian on Australian soil. “This is a big boost to my confidence. In the past I have been making up the numbers (in International races), but it’s been a learning process and you have to be patient in this sport. I know I can mix it with the best in the world now.”

In a spectacular night of fast running, Patrick Johnson (10.21) and Adam Miller 10.17 (PB) both produced A-qualifying standards in their semi-finals. Johnson went on to win the silver in the final, with Miller taking home the bronze. When you add to the mix Ambroze Ezenwa who also has a world championship A-qualifier but missed the titles due to injury, it appears the men will have medal prospects in the relay team for Osaka.

The men’s pole vault extended the evening’s program considerably, but the majority of the crowd stayed to enjoy a world class competition. Steve Hooker won the Australian title clearing 5.50m, however it was Brad Walker who vaulted the highest. The American had three attempts at an American record of 6.04m, aiming to be the fourth highest in the history of the event, but had to settle for a world leading 5.95m.

The much anticipated duel between Lisa Corrigan (ACT) and Sarah Jamieson (VIS) produced a classic head-to-head battle with Corrigan coming out the victor in 4.15.25. The pace was pedestrian early as Corrigan led the field before Jamieson hit the lead as they heard the bell. In a true duel, the two went neck and neck up the straight with Corrigan gaining the upper hand in the closing stages. Georgie Clarke (VIC) returned to form taking the bronze medal.

“I knew I had to take the lead and I was happy to share the work. That was the easiest 4.15 I’ve ever run and its really given me the confidence for running in championship races and I would love to make the final (in Osaka) ” Corrigan said.

A personal best time and another world championship A-qualifier is how Sally McLellan spent her evening in Brisbane. The Queenslander got out of the blocks well in the final and stormed up the track stopping the clock in 11.23sec (+1.8m). McLellan joined the growing list of athletes from the evening to cement their position in the team for Osaka and can now focus on achieving her goal of reaching the semi finals there.

Mark Fountain (VIC) celebrated his 25th birthday in winning his first Australian title in the men’s 1500m; the fastest man in the field with a personal best time five seconds quicker than that of his nearest rival going into the race, he was yet to win a title as a senior athlete before tonight.

After a slow early pace with Bradley Woods (NSW) taking the field through 800m in 2.01, Collis Birmingham (VIS) made a strong move to the lead, a position he held into the final straight. A race between four men coming into the straight, the US-based Fountain showed his class and kept his form beautifully to the line, as Paul Hoffman (NSW) and Jeremy Roff (NSWIS) dived to the line in a photo finish for the minor medals with Paul Hoffman winning silver.

“I did one of my biggest weeks of training last week running almost 160km, so its been good to win nationals without having to peak for it,” a content Fountain said after the race.

Joining Fountain at the travel agent on Monday morning will be Sean Wroe (VIS) who won the men’s 400m final. Wroe took advantage of the withdrawals of John Steffensen and Chris Troode to win his first Australian title in 45.80.

Wroe ran a controlled race until he exploded around the bend with 170m remaining to open up a gap on the field coming into the final 100m. Year 12 student Kurt Mulcahy (NSWIS) ran the race of his life when it counted to take home the silver and help his chances of getting in the relay squad for Osaka.

With notable absentees in the men’s 3000m, the Australian title was up for grabs and proved to be an entertaining affair. Thirty-five year-old Tanzanian Dickson Marwa sprinted away on the final lap and only Mark Tucker was able to keep pace. With 200m to go, it looked like Tucker might get up, however the African held on in 8.00.11, while Tucker was the first Australian over the line and took home the gold medal as Australian champion.

After winning five of the seven events, Kylie Wheeler took out the women’s heptathlon with 6044 points. The 800m was the final event of the gruelling program and Wheeler was pushed all the way by New Zealand’s Sarah Cowley. Leading all the way and with a finish befitting of an Australian champion, Wheeler held on for victory and became the first athlete of the championships to secure a spot on the team for Osaka.

It wasn’t a case of who would win the women’s 3000m steeplechase, but more like what time would Donna MacFarlane run who won convincingly in 9:34.21. Fellow Commonwealth Games representatives Melissa Rollison and Victoria Mitchell were notable absentees, but the noble MacFarlane was conscious of that.

“I would have liked for them to be here, as it would have been good to race my rivals, but you can only beat who is in the race. I’m really happy to win my first Australian title, as it is something I have always wanted to do,” the Tasmanian said.

World number two Bronwyn Thompson cleared 6.63 and produced another world championship B-qualifier in winning the women’s long jump, albeit with a 2.9m illegal tailwind.

After yesterday’s heats, American LaBronze Garrett was talking up his chances of winning the final and true to his word, he took out the men’s 400m hurdles final. Garrett was defeated by Brendan Cole a week ago in Melbourne at the Telstra A-Series but tonight he reversed the defeat winning in 50.17. “I hope my wife and daughter let me come back next year, I love Australia in the summer!”

Tamsyn Lewis (VIC) danced circles around her opposition in the women’s 400m final, winning convincingly in 51.73sec from New Zealander Monique Williams and Trisha Holz.

Lewis had a busy day, earlier qualifying fastest for the women’s 800m final and looks set to win the 400m-800m double, the first time its been done since 1981. Lewis won her heat comfortably 2.08.75, with Madeleine Pape (VIC) and Meike Flore (NSW) the other heat winners.

The men’s 800m final looks set to be a cracker, with all the favourites making it through, including defending champion Nick Bromley (NSWIS) and rising star Jeffrey Riseley (VIC) who finished first and second in the first heat respectively. They were taking no prisoners winning heat 1 in 1.48.71. Lachlan Renshaw (NSWIS) won a more tactical and scrappy heat 2 in 1.52.77

He came, he threw, he won again. Big man Christian Cantwell from the USA was a class ahead of the field in the men’s shot put in the absence of Scott Martin. Cantwell sent the shot 19.92m ahead of Justin Anlezark and Clay Cross.

Jarrod Bannister (QAS) produced a world championship A-qualifier of 83.70m taking out the men’s javelin, and setting a meet record in the process. Producing a B-qualifying performance of 78.71m was Joshua Robinson of Queensland in what was a great evening for long throws.

The men’s decathlon was taken out by Erik Surjan (AIS) with 7706 points from Jarrod Sims (SA) and Kyle McCarthy (QLD).

After close of business on day one, New South Wales is winning the under 18 state match on 154 points ahead of Victoria on 120 and Queensland on 118. Victoria would have been much closer if not for the worst of starts to the competition after false starting in the 4x100m, the first track event of their competition.

The action continues and concludes tomorrow at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre.
